MARIA LEAL DA COSTA

Alentejo Sculpture Park

The “Alentejo Sculpture Park – Maria Leal da Costa – Sculpture Park of Marvão” is an art destination that offers the possibility of guided tours and participation in thematic programs.

The project is the result of a 20-year journey that began with the development of the accommodation unit “Quinta do Barrieiro”, which based its strategies on two identity pillars: its natural landscape setting and the artistic activity of Maria Leal da Costa.

In 2010, Quinta do Barrieiro’s activity was publicly recognised, by the Alentejo Tourism Authority, with the “Qualification of the Offer” award, highlighting ‘the significant way in which Quinta do Barrieiro contributed to the qualification of the offer and to the strengthening of the attractiveness of the Alentejo destination’.

The company QB Art, promoter of the project “Alentejo Sculpture Park – Maria Leal da Costa – Sculpture Park of Marvão”, intends to continue this recognition, involving several local, national and international players from different sectors of activity, such as tourism companies, cultural industries, public entities, foundations, associations and educational institutions, creating synergies and promoting the endogenous potentialities capable of catalyzing, for the territory, cultural and economic development, in a perspective of nature protection.

The Project “Alentejo Sculpture Park – Maria Leal da Costa – Sculpture Park of Marvão” is developed in three well defined plots of Quinta do Barrieiro | Art Selection by Maria Leal da Costa, three inter-related sectors where art and nature are always present.

Programme

Tour A - Sculptures in the Landscape

Participants are challenged to take a guided tour along the paths of the estate, in a space where nature and art come together perfectly. In this area, in which there are several water springs and a lake, sculptures from Maria Leal da Costa’s private collection, by herself and other sculptors, are on display. The works created by human hand record the mutations of nature, keeping a record of the passage of time and natural cycles.

Tour B - Points of Departure

A walk created based on a Land-Art project by Maria Leal da Costa. In about 2 hectares, 4 stops and 4 meditation stations offer the visitor the possibility of a journey of discovery and self-knowledge. The walk takes an upward direction, calling for the progressive stripping away of the individual and a plunge into the deep contemplation brought about by the alliance of sculpture, landscape and poetry (contributed by the texts by Carlos Baptista and Maria Helena Marques)’.

QB Art - Gallery

Denomination of two exhibition spaces, one indoor and one outdoor, with the purpose of commercially promoting works by Maria Leal da Costa and other invited artists. The QB Art brand was created with a view to providing programmes for visiting and receiving groups and developing environmental, cultural and recreational activities. These include workshops, ateliers and plastic arts retreats, the publication of books, videos and educational materials, as well as the development of its own merchandising line and regular attendance at national and international art fairs.

"The Sculptures Walk"

Guided tours through Quinta do Barrieiro’s Contemporary Sculpture Park allow you to discover the charms of a unique natural space and, at the same time, establish contact with the creative universe of Alentejo sculptor Maria Leal da Costa.

Next, the artist opens her atelier and offers us a live demonstration of how to work the stone. We have to be prepared for some noise and dust…

Finally, at the QB Art gallery, we will have a regional tasting, accompanied by a good Ervideira wine.

Each adult participant will be given a serigraph signed by Maria Leal da Costa.

“Living and socialising with the art of Maria Leal da Costa”

After a brief explanation about the creative universe of Maria Leal da Costa, we set off for a guided tour of the “Alentejo Sculpture Park – Maria Leal da Costa – Marvão Sculpture Park”, in an adventure of artistic and sensory discovery.

Surrounded by sculptures and nature, we are surprised by a picnic with barbecue and Alentejo wine.

Each adult participant will be offered a serigraph signed by Maria Leal da Costa.

“The wonderful world of shapes”

From the stimulus provided by contact with the creative universe of sculptor Maria Leal da Costa, participants are challenged to create their own work of art.

The day will begin at 10am with a visit and walk through the Alentejo Sculpture Park, analysing the art on display and collecting some natural elements. During a break, there will be a tasting of regional products.

In the afternoon, in a workshop environment, everyone is challenged to shape their own work in clay, based on the materials collected.

Each adult participant will be given a serigraph signed by Maria Leal da Costa.

“Me Artist”

A two-day programme inviting participants to explore their personal creativity and develop an artistic project.

On the first day, from 10am, in the QB Art gallery space, there will be an introduction to the creative universe of Maria Leal da Costa and basic notions of drawing will be studied. This will be followed by a guided visit to the Sculpture Park, bringing participants into contact with the works of art on display and helping each participant to record, through drawing, notes of interest. The afternoon is free, allowing each person to think about the project to develop the following day. The morning of the second day will be dedicated to making a piece in clay, based on the notes and impressions collected the day before. On both days, there will be a tasting of regional products and an Ervideira wine tasting session.
